Paul McCartney pays tribute to Milton Keynes legend Jim Marshall

It's not everyday that Sir Paul McCartney plays a tune in honour of a Milton Keynes legend, but the Beatles star has done just that. Sir Paul released a video this week paying tribute to Jim Marshall, creator of the Marshall amp, who died in the concrete city on 5 April. Jim was the driving force behind Marshall Amplification, which is proudly based in Milton Keynes. The clip shows Sir Paul playing guitar during a session with his band. In it he says: "This goes to to the family and…

Beatcheck free party – Free party mixes

This Sunday sees us throw our first party of the year, so we thought we would make it a free one. Ain't we nice? To get you in the party mood (if you're not already) we thought we would share a few beats from the Beatcheck basement, where our band of dirty residents who are playing the free party, beaver away creating only the finest cuts of Breaks, Beats and Basslines for the party people of Milton Keynes. The show is free entry but we politely ask for donations on…

Oceana closes, leaving hole in Milton Keynes nightlife

Milton Keynes' biggest nightclub shut down this weekend, leaving a big cheese-shaped space in the concrete city's late night scene. Staff and promoters at Oceana in the Xscape buildng were informed the club would no longer open and all future events have been removed from the venue's website. There were fears for the 2,200 capacity club's closure in October 2011 when its parent company Luminar Leisure went into administration.  It then appeared to have been saved, but this weekend's developments have sealed the clubs's fate. Oceana opened in 2002, and…

Sheding Festival – Like Reading, but in a Shed

You should know about the 'dirty little art hole' that is The Watershed by now, and this weekend sees the venue celebrate its first birthday. Screw cake, jelly and musical chairs. These guys have created a version of Reading Festival - only you won’t need to sell your mother to Bulgarian pirates as a sex slave to get a ticket for this one. Like Reading it's spread over three days with a whole load of bands. That includes The Wondersmiths, who are not far off the Maccabees - who are…

Scratch Nights: alternative gallery action

Finding experimental music, film, or performance in Milton Keynes is hard at the best of times. But now they’re all available together— in an unlikely venue. Scratch Nights have been taking place in MK Gallery since January 2010, giving the concrete city an eclectic mix of alternative entertainment every Thursday night. Pretty much anything goes at these late night art events. To give you an idea, acts in recent months have included stripped back folk music from Powerdove, experimental sounds from London based record label Entr’acte, and Draw or Die,…

You don't need to have a record deal, play regular shows, or even have any friends. If you can produce noises that make people move their…

The National Bowl – top five videos

Milton Keynes might not have many big spaces for gigs but it does have the mother of all venues in the form of the National Bowl. In honour of the concrete city's very own outdoor arena we thought we'd bring you the top five memories that YouTube can provide: 1. The Foo Fighters ft.  Seasick Steve and John Paul Jones (2011) What do you get if you combine Dave Grohl, a member of Led Zeppelin, and a sick blues guitarist? Incredible music that's what... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqnTkGKFyV4 2. The Prodigy (2010) The…

Sweedish House Mafia promo reel

Alright, so this might be a bit 'hands in the air' for some tastes, but the Swedish House Mafia's 14 July show at the Bowl is the biggest night Milton Keynes is likely to see for a year or two, and this latest promo reel makes us think it's going to be pretty banging in the end - so we say get involved. You might just like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhv_4x4SeVg Find out more here

Classic Milton Keynes club night featured in BBC documentary

A club night that brought grime sounds to the masses in Milton Keynes has been recognised in a BBC documentary. Sidewinder, which was based in Northampton, but regularly took over the former Sanctuary during the early 2000's, was featured on the BBC's 1Xtra's Stories - Classic UK Clubs on Sunday. The night saw the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, and Ms Dynamite taking over the venue before they went on to be the UK music scene movers and shakers that they are today. Here's Dizzee Rascal alongside Slimzee keeping it…
