A fishy challenge for Beatcheck resident – CB Radio

At Beatcheck HQ like a bit of a challenge, We like to keep our underground basement dwelling DJ’s on their toes. We also like fish, big fish, little fish.... £1 fish? With this in mind, we sent the Beatcheck Monkey to talk to CB Radio with a bit of a fishy challenge. CB Radio had been created by former CityBreaks resident DJ Shift in 2009 as a alias to keep his DJ work and his production work separate. Known for his chunky, techy beats, lazy bass lines and sprinkles of Old Skool sounds,…

Beatcheck’s guide to Free Festivals in Milton Keynes, 2012.

Summer is apparently here, meaning only one thing, FESTIVAL SEASON has arrived. But you don't have to endure hours on trains, be crammed in to the back seat of your mate's Fiesta, or spend hundreds of pounds to get some festival action. Milton Keynes has a decent amount of festivals right on your door step. Here is our guide to Free Festivals in Milton Keynes for 2012. 1. Folk on the Green, June 10th, Stony Stratford. After 40 years, they must be doing something right. OK, so its not a…

Missing The Point? You could be soon.

Milton Keynes doesn't really have many Historic icons, but ever since its construction in the 80's, The Point in central Milton Keynes has been one of them. With recent news it looks like The pointy red tip of MK could soon be no more.   Plans to knock down The Point are underway and owners of the landmark have been showing off ideas for the new development at a recent exhibition. Predictably replacing our Red pyramid with yet more mainstream dull shopping units. We say lets keep The Point, give…

Stony Paint Jam take over The Vaults

Stony Stratford, the self-proclaimed "Jewel of Milton Keynes". It’s not well known for its underground scene but more for its pleasant pubs, folk festivals and curry houses. Tomorrow (Saturday 19th), Stony Paint Jam are coming to town, with the aim to raise funds for the much anticipated two day festival set to take place in Stony Stratford later in August. This weekend’s fundraiser is a cultural takeover in a unlikely venue, The Vaults Bar. Better known for its Irish jam sessions on a Sunday afternoon, the venue will play host…

Beatcheck free party – Free party mixes

This Sunday sees us throw our first party of the year, so we thought we would make it a free one. Ain't we nice? To get you in the party mood (if you're not already) we thought we would share a few beats from the Beatcheck basement, where our band of dirty residents who are playing the free party, beaver away creating only the finest cuts of Breaks, Beats and Basslines for the party people of Milton Keynes. The show is free entry but we politely ask for donations on…

Get down like your granny used to

Your gran might not look like she's up for clubbing, but give her a couple of sherries and we put money on the fact that she has some stories to tell from her youth that'll make your nights out sound like a Sunday stroll. And now you can sample the tricks she might have got up to thanks to Hedna's the Vintage Nightclub, which returns to the Stables this Saturday night. Hedna's sees a crowd of die-hard retro clubbers getting down  to sounds of the 1920's and 30's, while suited…

Beerboys rejoice as Oceana stays open

Beerboys and slapper girls were in a state of joy this evening as it was announced that Milton Keynes' favourite meat market is to remain open. Luminar Leisure, which runs cheese-fest nightspot Oceana, entered into administration earlier this week - presumably because people realised that its clubs were full of wasted half-wits. But today the administrators announced that Oceana, which attracts up to 2,000 punters each week with a combined IQ of, erm, 2,000, was one of the most popular venues in the chain, and is profitable enough to keep…

Producer profile: Magrex

In this new section we take a look at the concrete city's finest production talent. First up on the Beatcheck hit list is the mighty Magrex. Known to his mates as Stu McGregor, Magrex is a Milton Keynes-based producer-cum-live artist who has been composing beats for the best part of a decade. He gets the Beatcheck seal of approval thanks to his mashup of styles, with drum & bass, dubstep and electronica all thrown into an eclectic fusion of sounds. He also gets another Beatcheck gold star for throwing live…
